Creating and maintaining a business mobile app can be critical for a company’s success, but there are different mobile platforms to choose from; iOS, Android, and Windows are the biggest contenders. But how do you know which of the mobile platforms will fit your company and work efficiently for your needs? A good way is to take a look at what other similar companies are doing, and what is working best for businesses across the board.
Recently, the enterprise mobile services vendor Good Technology reported that companies still prefer Apple’s mobile platform over its counterpart, Android. iPhone and iPad both continue to dominate the share of business devices, even as the industry has experienced significant growth. Of the more than 5,000 companies using Good Technology’s services in the first quarter, the iPhone accounted for 51 percent of activated smartphones, while the iPad accounted for a whopping 92 percent of tablets. Overall, this means that the iOS platform has a 72 percent share of all mobile devices for these companies.
Tablets
Good Technology reported that app activation in tablets this quarter doubled that of smartphones. This means that tablets are being bought and used in different ways than smartphones, impacting conventional PCs. When smartphones first began to appear, many businesses saw them simply as expensive toys and dismissed them at first. Not so with tablets. After the success that has come with the integration of smartphones, most companies are developing strategies involving tablets as well.
App Growth
It was also reported that custom app activations grew 77 percent over the quarter, even more than the last increase of 55 percent. This fits with the trend of companies moving beyond basic-function apps, and beginning to use smarter and more sophisticated apps. More and more companies are realizing that custom apps built specifically for their needs can lead to an increase in productivity and profits.
So, even with incredible growth in activations, it would seem that Apple has maintained its dominance over the enterprise mobility market. While this may make it seem like the go-to mobile platform for app development, keep in mind that there are many factors that go into making the right decision for your company. These can include:
- Knowing your audience. Who is going to be using the app, and what are they going to need to get out of it?
- Knowing what kind of features you would like to include in your app.
- Looking to the future. Which platform will give you the most room to grow and evolve your mobile apps?
These are just a few of the questions you will want to be asking while developing your own business mobile app.
